I fast for greater physical and mental efficiency. - Plato
Therapeutic fasting is probably one of the oldest known therapies. It is conducive to detoxification and rejuvenation on every level of mind, body and spirit. Indeed, it is one of the quickest ways to increase elimination of accumulated wastes and toxins, while enhancing the healing processes of the body. Not only has it been known to alleviate numerous diseases, but it has also withstood the test of time for more than 5000 years as the one sure and healthy way to loose weight.
Fasting cures disease, dries up bodily humors, puts demons to flight, gets rid of impure thoughts, makes the mind clearer, the heart purer, and the body sanctified, and raises man to the throne of God. - Athenaeus (Greek physician)
When fasting, all organs and glands get a much needed and well-deserved rest, which in turn helps restore proper function and balance. As there is no food to digest, enzymes are relieved from their digestive role and can be mobilized for cleansing, gobbling up all sorts of waste matter such as dead and damaged cells, unwelcome microbes, metabolic wastes and pollutants. Fasting also thoroughly cleanses and purifies the bloodstream and helps re-establish a correct pH balance, which is essential for rebuilding health in the body.
During a fast the body goes into autolysis, which is the process of the body digesting its own cells. In the body's wisdom, it selectively decomposes those cells and tissues which are in excess, diseased, damaged, aged or dead. World-renowned fasting expert Dr. Buchinger, describes fasting as "the burning of rubbish". In addition, fasting also stimulates new cell and tissue generation.
Fasting is also an excellent method in helping people overcome addictions to food, cigarettes and other drugs. Fasting helps because what is sometimes metaphorically known as "cell memory craving" for the addictive substance is erased when toxins are removed. In addition, fasting "resets" the palate and hence it becomes easier for people to enjoy foods that are truly nutritious and in tune with their biophysical needs (e.g. vegetables, sprouts, fruits, seeds, grains, etc). Overall then, fasting helps to erase past bad habits and serves as an opportunity to begin a dietary programme and lifestyle that is more conducive to optimal health. At MyAfya we will also help develop a post-fasting dietary and supplements programme tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.
