Common Concerns

Is it safe?

Fasting is very safe, especially if it is supervised and done under proper conditions. The fact is that one can live healthily a long time on juices and even on water. The great fasting experts such as Airola, point out that we can go 40 days on water and 100 days on juices without any danger.

Will I constantly be hungry?

After the first few days of a fast, the appetite usually fades and one's attachment to food diminishes.

Will my metabolism not slow down and then I'll end up gaining lots of weight after the fast?

During the fast your body's metabolic rate will drop. However, the cleansing and healing that takes place will result in improved health and ultimately an increase in overall metabolic performance. Fasting will make your body more efficient, enhancing energy output.

Is fasting recognised by the medical establishment?

Although therapeutic fasting is probably one of the oldest known therapies, it has been largely ignored by the medical community despite the fact that significant scientific research on fasting exists in the medical literature. Numerous medical journals have carried articles on the use of fasting in the treatment of obesity, chemical poisoning, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, psoriasis, eczema, thrombophlebitis, leg ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, impaired or deranged appetite, asthma, depression, neurosis and schizophrenia.

Juice versus water fasting?

Juice fasting is much easier, safer and produces better results than fasting on water. This is because the juices provide such an abundant supply of vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and enzymes, which help neutralise toxins as well as aid in the rejuvenating process of the body. The alkalinising properties of the juices also help to alleviate the acid condition that most people suffer from. Re-establishing alkalinity is very important, as it is needed for rebuilding health in the body.

Should I exercise while fasting?

The more rest, the better results, as energy can be directed inward toward healing instead of other body functions. Short walks, light yoga and swimming are fine, but heavy workouts tax the system and inhibit repair and elimination.
